McCool's 21 saves in 1965 and 18 in 1966 out of the Reds' bullpen tied him for the
second-best NL total both years, although his eight relief losses in '65 led the
league. In 1967 Ted Abernathy won the stopper role from him, and in 1968 McCool suffered
a wrist injury.

Reds manager Don Heffner tries to win earlier, sending up three pinch hitters in the 8th: all three—Tony Perez, Gordy Coleman, and Art Shamsky—strike out. In the 9th, P Billy McCool bats for himself and grounds out with the sacks filled. The next reliever, Jack Baldschun, is jumped on for all eight runs in the 12th, an outing which increases his ERA for the year from 4.15 to 5.49
»August 16, 1967: Reds P Jim Maloney retires all 19 batters he faces, but has to leave the game with one out in the 7th when he steps in a hole and injures his ankle. Reliever Billy McCool allows two hits and the Reds win, 2–0, in Pittsburgh.
