Before he signed, the lefthanded McCarthy hoped to pitch in pro ball. He took over first base for the Giants in 1937 when manager Bill Terry retired as a player. In 1940, and again with the Giants in 1948, McCarthy led the league in pinch hits and pinch at-bats. (EW)
