Notre Dame's Alex McCarthy joined South Bend of the Central League in 1910, forcing their shortstop, Max Carey, to the outfield. By the end of the season, both were in Pittsburgh, McCarthy as the backup for shortstop Honus Wagner. His best year was 1912, when he hit .277 as the Pirates' second baseman. (CG)
