Injuries slowed Matthews' development in the minors, and he spent nine seasons pitching for six different organizations before he was called up to the St. Louis Cardinals in June 2000 to serve as a left-handed middle reliever and spot starter. In his first taste of major-league action, Matthews held opponents to a .227 batting average in 51 appearances. (EPW)
