The nephew of former Raiders cornerback Rod Martin, Al grew up a die-hard Dodgers fan during Los Angeles' glory days of the late 1970s but found major-league success as an outfielder with the Pirates. Originally drafted by the Braves, Martin nearly quit pro ball when his career stalled in Double-A Greenville in 1991, but pep talks from Hank Aaron and Willie Stargell convinced him to keep at it. He reached the majors with Pittsburgh in 1993 and the next season began a string of seven-plus seasons in which he consistently posted double-digit totals in both home runs and stolen bases.

Although he wasn't a very selective hitter, Martin was most successful batting near the top of the order. When the power-hungry Pirates tried to move him down to the three-spot, he struggled. Martin pouted in 1998 when Gene Lamont announced he would be platooning with the untested Manny Martinez, and would have been dealt to Arizona the following spring had Diamondbacks outfielder Bernard Gilkey not refused a move to Pittsburgh. Instead, Martin stayed with the Bucs, underwent laser eye surgery, and turned in his most productive season yet, batting .277 with 20 stolen bases, 24 homers, and 63 RBIs.

Resurrecting his career didn't keep Martin off the trading block. In February 2000, he was sent to San Diego for veteran outfielder John Vander Wal and was immediately named the Padres' starting left fielder and leadoff hitter. The honeymoon ended a month later, however, when Martin was arrested for a woman claiming to be his wife. Martin, already married to another woman, was eventually charged with bigamy.

Martin hit .306 in limited duty with the Padres, but was sent to Seattle at the trading deadline for John Mabry and Tom Davey. A year later, Martin was the topic of another bizarre news item when a newspaper reported that contrary to his professional bio, he had never played college football at USC. (JGR)

FROM THE BASEBALL CHRONOLOGY
» May 8, 1997: Jason Kendall's 3-run double leads Pittsburgh to an 8-run 4th inning as the Pirates outslug the Rockies, 10–8. Al Martin and Kevin Elster homer for the Bucs, who have scored 24 runs and 31 hits in their two games at Coors Field.

» May 14, 1997: At Three Rivers Stadium, Kevin Young's two-run pinch double puts Pittsburgh ahead and Al Martin finished a nine-run eighth inning with a grand slam as the surprising first-place Pirates beat Colorado, 15–10. Rockies pitching gives up 13 walks and blows leads of 6-3, 7-5 and 9-6. Tomorrow, the Pirates spot the Rocks three runs and beat them again.

» July 21, 1997: Phillies ace Curt Schilling fans 15 in eight innings, the most in the National League this season, but loses 3–2 to the visiting Pirates. Home runs by Al Martin and Kevin Polcovich are the difference. Polcovich homers in the seventh after he missing a suicide-squeeze bunt, resulting in a Buc' runner being tagged out. Before the game, the Phillies trade veteran Darren Daulton to Florida for outfielder Billy McMillon.

» July 27, 1999: The Pirates defeat the Mets, 5-1, in the first of Major League Baseball's "Turn Ahead the Clock Nights." Each team wears futuristic uniforms, with the home town squad becoming the "Mercury" Mets for the night. The futuristic theme is carried out throughout the evening, with the scoreboard flashing computerized photos of the players as each comes to the plate. Rickey Henderson, for example, is given three eyes and pointy ears, and plays "left quadrant." Al Martin hits the 1st of his two home runs in the 1st "sector," and rookie Kris Benson goes the distance for the win.

» February 23, 2000: The Padres obtain OF Al Martin from the Pirates for OF John Vander Wal, and pitchers Jim Sak and Geraldo Padua. San Diego also signs pitcher Matt Clement to a four year agreement.

» March 21, 2000: Padres OF Al Martin is arrested on charges that he exchanged punches with a woman who claims to be his wife. Shawn Haggerty-Martin said the couple were married in Las Vegas two years ago. Martin said the couple had the ceremony, but that he didn't think it was real. Haggerty-Martin contends that the outfielder is a bigamist.

» April 16, 2000: The Padres defeat the Astros, 13-3, as OF Al Martin sets a team record by scoring five runs in the contest.

» July 31, 2000: The Mariners obtain OF Al Martin from the Padres in exchange for OF John Mabry and P Tom Davey.

» October 14, 2000: The Yankees whitewash the Mariners, 5-0, behind Roger Clemens' 1-hit shutout. Clemens fans 15 Mariners as New York moves out to a 3-games-to-1 lead over Seattle. The Yankees score their runs on a 3-run homer by Derek Jeter and a 2-run blast by David Justice. Al Martin's double off the glove of Tino Martinez in the 7th inning is the Mariners' only hit. The two team's total of six hits ties an ALCS record for fewest safeties in a game.
