Books and articles about Fred Manrique

Manrique joined shortstop Ozzie Guillen in 1987 to continue a White Sox tradition of slick, Venezuelan middle infielders begun by Luis Aparicio and Chico Carrasquel. Manrique had had trials with three other major league teams, and had played for Jim Fregosi in Triple-A Louisville in 1986. Fregosi was named White Sox manager that June, and had Chicago acquire Manrique from St. Louis in December.

The infielder remained in Chicago for less than three years, splitting time at second base with Donnie Hill. He was traded while in the midst of his best season (batting just a hair under .300) with Harold Baines and Scott Fletcher to the Texas Rangers for Sammy Sosa and Wilson Alvarez. At the start of the next season he was moved once again, this time to Minnesota for Jeff Satzinger. After batting only .237 as the backup to Al Newman, Manrique was released by the Twins. He finished up with nine games with Oakland in 1991. (RL/AF)
