The quiet Mahaffey was at his best as the fourth starter for the 1931 AL champion Athletics, going 15-4 (4.21) and finishing third in the AL in winning percentage. His ERA seem high by modern standards, but in the explosive offensive times he pitched in, they were usually average or better.
