Mike Lum hits three homers as the Braves beat the Padres, 8–1, in the first game of a doubleheader. The Braves continue hitting in game two to win, 9–4.
» May 19, 1971: Clete Boyer and Mike Lum hit two homers apiece to lead the Braves to a 10–4 win over the Expos. After Boyer homers in the 3rd, Lum follows with a solo shot. The red hot Boyer now has five homers in five games and six for the year, but this is his last ML homer.
» August 21, 1972: Phil Niekro and the Braves beat the Phillies 2–1 in 11 innings to snap Steve Carlton's 15-game winning streak. After retiring 19 batters in a row, Carlton (20–7) puts two runners on in the 11th, before Mike Lum singles home the winner.

In San Diego, the Reds drop seven runs on the Padres in the top of the 14th to win, 12–5. Mike Lum starts the scoring with a pinch homer. The seven runs in the 14th is one shy of the National League mark, and has never been topped in the American League.
