Lugo's hitting helped him beat out Tim Bogar to replace Ricky Gutierrez as the Astros' regular shortstop in 2000. His ability to make consistent contact and to occasionally knock one out of the park overcame the liabilities of his erratic arm and porous glove. (EPW)

» September 8, 2000: The Astros defeat the Cubs, 13-10, as Houston 2B Julio Lugo has the first 5-hit game of his career.

» May 6, 2001: The Astros defeat the Expos, 13-7, as Julio Lugo gets five hits, including a pair of doubles. Jeff Bagwell has four hits, including a grand slam, and five ribbies. Geoff Blum has four hits for the Expos.

» October 9, 2001: The Braves defeat the Astros in the opener of their NL Divisional Series, 7-4, behind Chipper Jones' 3-run home run. SS Julio Lugo's error sets up the deciding blast, as Rudy Seanez gets the victory in relief.
