Books and articles about Fred Luderus

Luderus was Grover Cleveland Alexander's first baseman in the Phillies' few strong years before 1920. By the standards of the time, he was a power hitter, batting fifth behind NL HR leader Gavvy Cravath to give the Phillies their middle-of-the-order punch. A lefthanded batter who threw righthanded, he was the first to hit two over-the-fence homers at Baker Bowl in a single game, long clouts even in that stadium's modest confines.

He came up with the Cubs, filled in for the ailing Frank Chance for a few games, and was traded for Bill Foxen, an undistinguished pitcher. He captained the pennant-winning 1915 Phillies and was their only strong hitter in the losing WS with the Red Sox, batting in six of his team's meager total of ten runs. An iron man, he played 533 consecutive games and was proud of never having been lifted for a pinch hitter. (ADS)
FROM THE BASEBALL CHRONOLOGY
» May 17, 1911: Fred Luderus cracks an 11th-inning home run to give Grover Alexander a 4–3 win over Pittsburgh. The Phils (23-9) move back into first place.

» July 4, 1911: The Phillies mug the Giants, 7–5, literally knocking New York P Doc Crandall out of the box, when he is hit with a line drive by Red Dooin. Doc gets relief from Rube Marquard, but Pete Alexander picks up the win. Fred Luderus strokes two homers for the Quakers.

» May 20, 1913: The Phils beat the Reds, 5–1, behind Grover Cleveland Alexander. The only Cincy run comes home on a boot by Fred Luderus.

» September 16, 1916: At Baker Bowl, Grover Cleveland Alexander is coasting with a two hit, 6–0 lead in the 8th over the Cubs, when weak-hitting Steve Yerkes lines a single followed by manager Joe Tinker's only hit of the year. On a DP grounder, 1B Fred Luderus pulls his foot of the bag and Chicago goes on to score three runs. Second-place Philadelphia wins, 6–3, to pull with one 1/2 games of Brooklyn.

» July 7, 1919: In the first game of a doubleheader against the Giants, the Phillies steal eight bases in the ninth but lose 10-5. Fred Luderus, Eddie Sicking, Hick Cady, and Gavvy Cravath each have two thefts.

» September 24, 1919: The Brooklyn Robins defeat the Phillies twice on Fred Luderus Day in Philadelphia. The second game is the 525th in a row played by the Philadelphia 1B, who is presented with a diamond stickpin and gold watch between games to commemorate his endurance effort. He will end the season with a consecutive-game streak of 553.

» August 22, 1927: Braves OF Eddie Brown passes Fred Luderus's modern NL mark of 533 consecutive games played (1916-19). Steve Brodie had 574 in 1893-97.
