An eighth-round pick by the Seattle Mariners, Lowe turned down a basketball scholarship at Michigan to sign with the M's in 1991. After six years as a starter in the minors, he was shipped to the Boston Red Sox in July 1997 along with Jason Varitek for Heathcliff Slocumb. Shifted to the bullpen by the Red Sox, Lowe became the Boston's closer in 1999, and led the American League in saves with 42 in 2000. (GL)

FROM THE BASEBALL CHRONOLOGY
» July 31, 1997: How do you spell relief? In a fine move for Boston, the Red Sox send reliever Heathcliff Slocumb to the Mariners for minor leaguers Jason Varitek and Derek Lowe. Slocumb will not last a season in Seattle, while Varitek and Lowe will become key members of the 1999 Sox. The Mariners also ship budding star Jose Cruz, Jr. to Toronto for relievers Mike Timlin and Paul Spoljaric.

» October 9, 1999: The Red Sox score six runs in the 7th inning and defeat the Indians, 9-3, to stay alive in their division series. Derek Lowe gets the win in relief, as Brian Daubach and John Valentin hit home runs for Boston.

» April 27, 2002: Boston P Derek Lowe hurls Fenway Park's 1st no–hitter since 1965, shutting out Tampa Bay, 10–0. It is the first career complete game for Lowe, who began last season as the Red Sox closer. In his first start this year, he hurled seven hitless innings against the Orioles.

» May 20, 2002: Behind a combined 2-hitter by Derek Lowe (7–1) and Rich Garces, the Red Sox defeat the visiting White Sox, 9–0. Shea Hillenbrand pokes a 3-run homer, a 303 ft. drive around the Pesky pole, one of the shortest homers in decades. It lands in the front-row lap of a youngster.

» June 16, 2002: The Red Sox, behind Derek Lowe, defeat the Atlanta Braves, 6–1. Lowe strikes out 10 to pin the loss on Tom Glavine. For the Braves, it is one of their few losses to American League foes; they will go 15–3 in inter-league games this year.

» September 14, 2002: P Derek Lowe wins his 20th game as the Red Sox beat the Orioles, 6–4. Lowe becomes the 1st pitcher in history to win 20 games the season after saving 20. He is also the 1st to record at least 40 saves and later win 20. Dennis Eckersley and John Smoltz did it the other way around.

» September 22, 2002: Pedro Martinez (20-4) allows two runs in the 1st inning, then coasts to his 20th win of the season as the Red Sox beat the hapless Orioles, 13–2. Trot Nixon hits a grand slam and Johnny Damon a pair of homers to keep the Sox playoff hopes alive. Martinez joins Derek Lowe in giving the Sox the first pair of 20-game winners since 1949.
