A righthanded batting leadoff man with fair power, the handsome, mustachioed Bobby Lowe (along with Kid Nichols and Herman Long) starred on all five Beaneater (later known as the Braves) pennant winners of the 1890s, playing second base in an infield that has been called the 19th century's best. On Decoration Day 1894, Lowe became the first major leaguer to homer four times in one game, doing it off Cincinnati's Elton "Iceberg" Chamberlain. The home runs came consecutively, in six at-bats, all over the 250-foot left-field wall of Boston's Congress Street Grounds, the Beaneaters' temporary home while their regular park was under repair. After the 20-11 Boston victory, the crowd showered Lowe with $160 in silver coins. (ADS)
FROM THE BASEBALL CHRONOLOGY
» May 11, 1893: The Beaneaters edge Brooklyn 9–8 with the help of Bobby Lowe's 5th inning grand slam.

» May 3, 1895: Bobby Lowe scores six runs and registers five hits, leading Boston to a 27–11 rout of Washington.

» May 11, 1898: With the bases full and one out, Oriole RF Tommy O'Brien muffs Bobby Lowe's short fly, recovers the ball, runs in, tags Jimmy Collins at 2B, and steps on the bag to force Chick Stahl and complete an unassisted DP.

» May 3, 1901: The Giants beat Boston, 2-1, as Christy Mathewson wins his 3rd straight, beating Kid Nichols, on a 3-hitter. Bobby Lowe, who has all of Boston's hits, scores the Beaneater's only run on a passed ball.

» September 1, 1902: In today's split with the Phillies, Tinker, Evers, and Chance appear together in the Chicago Cubs lineup for the first time, but not in the positions that will earn them immortality. Johnny Evers, a New York State League rookie, starts at SS, with Joe Tinker at 3B, Frank Chance at 1B, and veteran Bobby Lowe at 2B. Philadelphia takes the opener, 11-3 behind White, while Chicago is victorious in the nitecap, 6-1, behind Jack Taylor's pitching.

» October 28, 1904: After a 4th-place finish, the Cleveland Blues release Bill Armour and name Nap Lajoie manager. Armour takes over the Tigers, where Ed Barrow and Bobby Lowe split the season, as Detroit falls to 7th.

» June 10, 1959: Rocky Colavito hits four consecutive home runs in Baltimore's Memorial Stadium to lead the Indians to an 11–8 win. Colavito joins Lou Gehrig and Bobby Lowe as the only ML players to hit four consecutive four-baggers.

» May 7, 1997: The Expos score a National League-record 13 runs in the 6th inning of their game against the Giants on the way to a 19-3 win. The Expos send 17 batters to the plate. Mike Lansing homers twice in the inning to drive in five runs, becoming the 3rd Expo to perform the feat, and the 1st NL second baseman to do so since Bobby Lowe in 1894. Henry Rodriguez hits a grand slam in the 5-run 5th.
