According to some historians, Lohrman invented the slider. Others merely credit him as one of the first to use the pitch extensively. A Giants starter from 1938 to 1941, he was traded to the Cardinals in December 1941 as part of the deal that brought Johnny Mize to New York, but after pitching five games for St. Louis in 1942 he was sold back to the Giants. Lohrman went on to have his best season, 14-5 and a 2.48 ERA. (BC)
FROM THE BASEBALL CHRONOLOGY
» August 13, 1939: The Giants hit three successive HRs in the fourth inning, with Joe Moore, Alex Kampouris, and P Bill Lohrman connecting. The Giants add four more HRs in the game to beat the Phils 11-2.

» May 30, 1940: The Giants sweep the Dodgers 7–0 and 12–5 in 12 innings dropping Brooklyn out of 1st place. In the opener, Carl Hubbell uses just 81 pitches and gives up only a 2nd inning single to Johnny Hudson, who is erased on a DP. Only Cookie Lavagetto gets to a 3–2 count. Bill Lohrman wins the 2nd game in 12 innings.

» June 11, 1940: In the 2nd of two, Paul Dean debuts with the Giants and beats the Cubs, 3–1, on four hits. Joe Moore runs his hitting streak to 14 games when he belts an 8th inning homer off Claude Passeau. The Giants win the opener 4–0 behind Bill Lohrman to pull within one 1/2 games of the Reds and Dodgers. Bill Lee is the losing Cubs hurler in that one.

» December 11, 1941: The Giants acquire Johnny Mize from the Cardinals for three players -- Bill Lohrman, Ken O'Dea, and Johnny McCarthy -- and $50,000. Because of injuries, Mize's home run production had fallen from 43 to 16 in 1941, but he will bounce back to lead the National League in 1947-48.

» July 31, 1943: Dodger Dolf Camilli, the league's MVP in 1941, is traded with Johnny Allen to the Giants for Bill Sayles, Bill Lohrman, and Joe Orengo. Camilli declines to report his new team and retires to a California ranch for the season. The next year he will manage in the PCL and in 1945 will return briefly to the Red Sox.
