» March 29, 2000: The Cubs open the major league season in the Tokyo Dome in Tokyo, Japan, by defeating the Mets, 5-3, in the first big league game ever played outside of North America. Jon Lieber gets the victory and new ace Mike Hampton takes the loss. Shane Andrews hits the first home run of the new millennium. Mark Grace and Mike Piazza also homer.

» May 24, 2001: The Cubs' Jon Lieber one-hits the Reds, 3-0, ending Cincinnati's NL-record streak of 208 straight games without being shut out. 2B Juan Castro gets the Reds only hit. The efficient Lieber needs only 78 pitches in the game.

» October 3, 2001: Cubs ace Jon Lieber picks up his 20th win of the season, beating the Reds, 13–7. He's the first Cubs 20-game winner since Greg Maddux in 1992. Sammy Sosa hits a 3-run home run for roundtripper No. 61, as the Cubs score five in the 7th. Sosa pushes his RBI total to 154 to lead the majors.
