Books and articles about Hub Leonard

Hub was a sterling lefthander in the days of Red Sox greatness, although he never achieved a 20-win season. He threw two no-hitters and his 1.01 ERA in 1914 is the all-time top mark. In 1927, then a successful California grape grower, he made public two letters implicating Ty Cobb, Tris Speaker, and himself in a possibly fixed game in 1919. Other than resentment of his two former managers, his motive was unclear. When he refused to leave California to press his case, the two Hall of Famers were exonerated by Judge Landis. (ADS)
FROM THE BASEBALL CHRONOLOGY
» June 3, 1918: Boston lefty Hub Leonard pitches his second no-hitter, beating the Tigers' all-right-handed lineup in Detroit 5-0, and allowing just a first-inning walk. Babe Ruth, playing CF, slugs a first-inning HR, his second in two days. Ty Cobb, out a week with an injured shoulder, pinch-hits in the ninth and fouls out.

» May 8, 1929: At Pittsburgh's Schenley Park, the Giants Carl Hubbell pitches an 11–0 no-hitter against the Pirates, allowing just one walk. In the 9th, the 1st two batters reached on errors before Hubbell records a strikeout and starts the game-ending DP. It's the first no-hitter by a lefthander since Hub Leonard in 1918. Chick Fullis starts the scoring with a home run in the 2nd, his 3rd in three days, and Mel Ott adds two home runs to take the National League lead.
