The Leibrandt for Bob Tufts deal remains one of the Royals' best trades. While Tufts never pitched another game, Charlie established himself as the paradigm of reliability in the Kansas City rotation. Not equipped with one outstanding pitch, he mastered the talent of painting the edge of the strike zone while never coming down the center. Overshadowed by Saberhagen and Gubicza, he posted the most Royals victories from 1985 to 1988. (FJO)
FROM THE BASEBALL CHRONOLOGY
» April 13, 1980: In his first ML start, Cincinnati's Charlie Leibrandt shuts out the Braves, 5–0, at Riverfront.

» August 5, 1984: The Royals sweep two from the first-place Tigers, winning 5–4 and 5–0, in the first of three straight doubleheaders for Detroit. KC takes the opener when Dane Iorg bloops a double over Ruppert Jones's head in left. Charlie Leibrandt wins the nitecap with relief help from Dan Quisenberry in the 9th.

» October 20, 1985: After giving up just two hits in eight innings, Charlie Leibrandt is raked with three two-out hits and loses 4–2. St. Louis leads 2-0.

» May 16, 1987: After starting off with an 18–2 record, the Brewers drop their 10th in a row, losing 13–0 to Kansas City. The Brew Crew's only hit off Charlie Leibrandt is a bunt single.

» July 24, 1990: Who needs a pickoff motion? Atlanta pitcher Charlie Leibrandt picks off Craig Biggio by beating him back to 1B. Hough wins the game, 9–3. Atlanta takes the nitecap from Houston scoring in the 8th and 9th to win, 9–8.

» August 9, 1990: San Diego SS Garry Templeton collects his 2,000 ML hit, exactly 14 years after getting his first. The Padres beat the Braves 7–0, with Bruce Hurst winning over Charlie Leibrandt.

» October 19, 1991: The Twins defeat the Braves 5-2 in Game one of the World Series. SS Greg Gagne's 3-run home run off Charlie Leibrandt in the 5th inning helps support the strong effort of winning pitcher Jack Morris.

» July 4, 1992: In Atlanta's 4–2 win over the Cubs, Brave SS Jeff Blauser hits a 2–run home run in the 1st inning to start the scoring. It is the 1,776th big league homer hit on the holiday. Brian Hunter adds a solo shot to back Charlie Leibrandt (7–3).

» July 25, 1992: The Braves defeat the Pirates, 1–0, despite getting only one hit. The one safety is a 2nd-inning homer by OF David Justice off Danny Jackson. Charlie Leibrandt goes eight innings for the win.

» August 29, 1992: After striking out his 1,000th career batter in Atlanta’s 7-6 win over Philadelphia, Braves P Charlie Leibrandt rolls the ball into the Atlanta dugout to keep as a souvenir. Unfortunately, he forgets to call time, and the runner Ricky Jordan on base is allowed to advance on the error.

» December 9, 1992: The Braves sign free agent Cy Young Award and Gold Glove winner Greg Maddux to a 5-year contract, and then trade pitchers Charlie Leibrandt and Pat Gomez to the Rangers in exchange for 3B Jose Oliva. Leibrandt (15–7) saw his star fall in Atlanta when he gave up 11th-inning extra base hits in the 1992 World Series and the 1991 NLCS. Maddux, who turned down a $28.5 million contract extension in mid–season with the Cubs, signs for $28 million, $6 million less than the Yankees offered.
