The older brother of Tigers pitcher Frank Lary, Al attended the University of Alabama where he set a number of offensive records as a wide receiver on the Tide's football team. After joining the Chicago Cubs in 1954, Lary toiled in the minor leagues for the majority of his career. He pitched in 16 major league games with the Cubbies in middle relief, the first in 1954 and the rest in his final year, but was also used a pinch runner in four games in 1955. Lary accidentally drowned in a pond near his home in Alabama in July 2001. (AG)
