Red Sox rookie Wade Boggs hits his first ML home run in the bottom of the 11th inning to give Boston a 5–4 win over Detroit. Boggs will finally crack the starting lineup for good after tomorrow's game, in which regular 3B Carney Lansford severely sprains his ankle while unsuccessfully trying to stretch a triple into an inside-the-park home run. Boggs hits .390 in Lansford's absence and .349 for the season.
» December 6, 1982: The Red Sox trade 3B Carney Lansford, OF Garry Hancock, and minor leaguer Jerry King to Oakland for OF Tony Armas and C Jeff Newman. Lansford, who led the AL in hitting in '81, is expendable with the emergence of Wade Boggs at 3B.
» June 21, 1984: Oakland's Carney Lansford goes 0-for-5 against Detroit, snapping his 24-game hit streak. The streak is an Oakland record and the longest AL skein of the year. Lansford will collect hits in next 11 games.
» October 1, 1989: Minnesota's Kirby Puckett and San Diego's Tony Gwynn each win batting titles on the final day of the regular season. Puckett goes 2-for-5 to edge Carney Lansford .339 to .336, while Gwynn goes 3-for-4 to beat Will Clark .336 to .333.
» June 11, 1990: Ageless Nolan Ryan pitches his unprecedented 6th career no-hitter, striking out 14 batters in a 5–0 win over the A's. He is the first to pitch a no-hitter for three different teams, and the first to throw a no-hitter in three different decades. The A's are missing Mark McGwire, Jose Canseco, and Carney Lansford in the lineup.
» December 31, 1990: A's 3B Carney Lansford is severely injured in a New Year's Eve snowmobile accident. He will undergo surgery on January 6th to reconstruct the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee as well as repair other ligament damage. Lansford will play just five games in 1991, but return to the starting lineup in 1992.
