Although a weak bat kept him in a utility role most of his career, Lake had a knack for drawing walks and topped 100 in each of the three years he played regularly, 1945-47. He led AL shortstops in assists and double plays in '45 for the Red Sox and scored 105 runs for the 1946 Tigers. (LAW)
FROM THE BASEBALL CHRONOLOGY
» May 7, 1940: The Dodgers are drubbed by the Cardinals 18–2 when St. Louis totals 49 bases on 20 hits. The Cards have 13 extra base hits, seven of them home runs to set a National League mark for extra bases on long hits (29). Eddie Lake and Johnny Mize each have a pair. Brooklyn then becomes the first NL team to fly, going from St. Louis to Chicago on two planes. The Red Sox flew the same route July 30, 1936, but for reasons of cost and risk, no other teams try the airlines. The Dodgers will fly from New York from Chicago.

» May 17, 1944: In the nitecap of a doubleheader, Bobby Doerr hits for the cycle, but last-place Boston loses to the Browns, 12–8. The loss leaves the Browns just a half game behind the Yankees. Boston outhits the Browns, 15–14, but Red Sox hurlers, including a 2-inning stint by infielder Eddie Lake, walk 14 batters. Emmett O'Neill is the loser to Al Jurisich. In the opener, Boston's Tex Hughson allows four hits in the 5–1 win.

» June 2, 1944: The Tigers beat the Red Sox 4-1 for their 7th straight win, as Red Sox SS Eddie Lake tosses 2 hitless innings in relief.

» January 3, 1946: The Red Sox get Rudy York from Detroit in a trade for Eddie Lake.

» April 23, 1947: At Detroit, the Tigers use consecutive solo homers in the 8th from Roy Cullenbine, Dick Wakefield, and Hoot Evers to beat the White Sox, 7–4. Cullenbine adds an earlier homer and Eddie Lake adds a 5th Bengal blast to back Fred Hutchinson's win over Eddie Lopat.

» May 26, 1947: Eddie Lake's homer is the only score as the Tigers edge the Indians, 1–0. Stubby Overmire prevails over Black.
