Krause won his first ten starts as a rookie in 1909; six of the ten wins were shutouts, and four of those were 1-0. He finished the season 18-8 with an AL-best 1.39 ERA, the ninth-best AL ERA ever and a record low for AL rookies. He still had to scrape for work on a staff that featured Jack Coombs and Hall of Famers Chief Bender and Eddie Plank, and he was 6-6 and 12-8 the following two seasons as the Athletics won consecutive World Championships. He didn't pitch in either WS. Krause was sent to the minors with a sore arm in 1912 and found a home in the Pacific Coast League, winning 249 games there in 16 seasons. Overall, he won 337 games in his professional career. (NLM)
FROM THE BASEBALL CHRONOLOGY
» July 18, 1909: Harry Krause of the A's loses, 5–4, in 11 innings to the Browns, ending his 10-game winning streak.

» August 16, 1909: The A's jump on Walter Johnson, scoring six runs in five innings, before relief comes in. Before exiting, Johnson hits his first ML homer, off Harry Krause, who will lead the A.L. in ERA with a sparkling 1.39.

» September 17, 1910: Detroit pitcher Ed Summers, a notoriously poor hitter, bounces two home runs into the stands in a 10–3 victory over the A's. The two homers, both off Harry Krause, will comprise his career total.

» July 12, 1911: In the first inning of a 9–0 win over the Athletics at Detroit, Ty Cobb walks, then on consecutive pitches steals 2B, 3B, and home off lefty Harry Krause. Twice he beats perfect throws by C Ira Thomas. After Cobb reaches on a fielder's choice in the 3rd, Sam Crawford homers. In the 7th, Cobb walks, is bunted to 2B, and scores on a sacrifice fly, knocking the ball out of the hands of the new catcher Paddy Livingston.

» July 12, 1912: At Detroit, the Tigers roll over the Athletics and Harry Krause, 9–0. Ty Cobb swipes home in the 1st inning to start the Tigers off.
