Chief Koy, of Indian ancestry, was a powerfully-built righthanded hitter with blazing speed. A Dodger regular in 1938 and 1939, he homered in his first ML at-bat (4/19/38). A son, Ernie Jr., played for the pro football Giants, 1965-70. (LAW)

» April 15, 1938: The Dodgers buy OF Ernie Koy from the Yankees.

» April 19, 1938: In the top of the first inning at Philadelphia, Dodger Ernie Koy homers in his first ML at bat. In the bottom of the inning, leadoff man Emmett Mueller also hits a HR in his first time up in the ML.

» June 15, 1938: Johnny Vander Meer stuns baseball by pitching his 2nd successive no-hitter, defeating the Dodgers and Max Butcher, 6–0. Brooklyn plays the first night game ever at Ebbets Field. In front of 38,748 fans, including spectators Babe Ruth and several hundred fans from Vandy's home town of Midland Park, NJ. Vandy strikes out seven and walks 8, including three one-out walks in the 9th. A force out at home on a grounder by Ernie Koy and a fly ball by Leo Durocher ends the game. In a pregame event, Koy, with a 10-yard start but running in his Reds' uniform, beats Olympic champion Jesse Owens in the 100-yard dash.

» June 12, 1940: In a sweet trade for Brooklyn, GM Larry MacPhail perfects his outfield and gets one pitcher: Joe Medwick and 37-year-old Curt Davis, a 22-game winner last year, are acquired from the Cardinals for Ernie Koy, P Carl Doyle, minor leaguers Bert Haas and Sam Nahem, and $125,000. Medwick is hitting .338.

» June 14, 1940: In his first appearance as Ray Blades' successor, new Cardinal manager Billy Southworth wins a 6–2 verdict over the Phillies. New Card Ernie Koy has two hits to lead a nine-hit attack for Bob Bowman.

» May 14, 1941: The Giants sell Ernie Koy to the Reds and send P Harry Gumbert to the Cardinals for P "Fiddler Bill" Bill McGee. Gumbert will go 11–5 for the Cards in 1941 and pitch another 10 years.

» May 29, 1941: The Cards nip the Reds 10–9 for their 10th straight win. The last five are one run victories. The Reds almost pull the game out, scoring three in the 9th, but Marty Marion snags a Ernie Lombardi line drive and doubles up Ernie Koy at 2B.

» May 2, 1942: The Reds sell OF Ernie Koy to the Phils and Frank Secory to Milwaukee (AA).
