A starter the first half of his career, Kline was converted to relief and collected 108 saves. As a Pirate starter, his 18 losses in 1956 and 16 in 1958 were NL highs. In 1965 he led the AL with 29 saves and was second with 74 appearances, giving him the single-season Senator club records for saves, games pitched, and games finished. Returning to the Pirates in 1968, Kline had 12 relief wins (10 in succession) to lead the NL.

Kline had one of the most peculiar pitching rituals in baseball, touching his cap, belt, and shirt before each pitch. One of the poorer-hitting pitchers in the game, Kline managed only a lifetime .092 average. (JLE)

FROM THE BASEBALL CHRONOLOGY
» May 17, 1952: Behind the spectacular pitching of Ben Wade, the Dodgers coast to a 12–7 win over the Pirates. Wade strikes out six batters in a row and does not allow a hit until rookie Tony Bartirome's single in the 6th when the Corsairs plate six runs. The Brooks get 11 hits including a bases loaded triple by Duke Snider. Roy Campanella is hit on the hand by a pitch from Ron Kline but x-rays reveal no fracture.

» May 26, 1955: Dodgers P Don Newcombe becomes the only National League pitcher of the decade to steal home when he hits a triple and swipes home in the 9th inning in Pittsburgh. Newk has two RBIs as he wins 6–2 over Ron Kline (2-6).

» May 20, 1956: The Pirates draw their biggest crowd in five years—32,326—and sweep a pair from the Braves, 6–5 and 5–0. Dale Long hits a homer in each game and drives in seven runs. Bob Friend wins the opener and Ron Kline fires the six hitter in the nitecap.

» May 29, 1956: Dodgers P Don Newcombe beats the Pirates 10–1 and blanks Dale Long in four ABs, stopping his home run streak. Newk has a 3-run double off Ron Kline in the 2nd to help clinch his 7th win.

» May 31, 1958: Braves Hank Aaron, Eddie Mathews, and Wes Covington homer in succession off Ron Kline of the Pirates in an 8–3 win. The same trio hit successive home runs on June 26th last year. Warren Spahn coasts to his 8th win.

» September 16, 1958: The Pirates keep their slim pennant hopes alive as they win a suspended game from the Cards, 2-1, then take the regular game, 3–1, behind Ron Kline. In the opener, young George Witt (9-2) picks up where he left off when the game was suspended six weeks ago, winning his 8th straight game. For Witt, plagued with arm troubles all year, it is his last appearance of the year, as he leaves on the 24th to finish his senior year at Long Beach State. Witt's 1.61 ERA in 106 innings is the National League's best. Alas, he'll go 0-7 next season with a 6.96.

» August 2, 1959: Giants 1B Willie McCovey hits the first of his 521 ML home runs, off Ron Kline, as San Francisco downs the Pirates 5–3. Johnny Antonelli wins his 15th game.

» May 2, 1960: Ron Kline's 7-hitter gives the Cardinals a 4–3 win and ends Pittsburgh's streak at nine games, the club's longest since 1945. Roy Face issues a bases-loaded walk in the 9th for his 2nd straight loss.

» August 18, 1961: Ron Kline, purchased from the Angels on August 10, blanks the Red Sox on four hits to give the Tigers a 5–0 win. Bill Monbouquette fails for the 9th time to win his 9th, lasting just four innings and gives up homers to Billy Bruton and Rocky Colavito.

» September 15, 1961: The Yankees set a new American League record for most homers in a season (222), as they split a doubleheader in Detroit, winning 11–1 and losing 4–2. Circuit blows by Bill Skowron and Yogi Berra in the opener help Whitey Ford win his 24th and increase New York's homer total to 222. This breaks the old mark set by the 1947 Giants and tied by the 1956 Reds. Norm Cash and Steve Boros homer in the nitecap to back Ron Kline's 7-hitter.

» December 3, 1966: The Senators bring Camilo Pascual, along with Bernie Allen, back to Washington send Minnesota P Ron Kline in exchange.

» December 2, 1967: The Twins trade P Ron Kline to the Pirates for infielder Bob Oliver, Kline was 7–1 in 1967 and will post a 12–5 record in relief for the Bucs in 1968.
