Kirke was legendary as an eccentric who lived for his base hits. His fearsome hitting offset his poor defense, about which he was unconcerned. The despair of four ML teams who tried to fit him into their lineups, Kirke collected over 3,000 hits in his 1906-35 minor league career. (JK)
FROM THE BASEBALL CHRONOLOGY
» September 3, 1915: Cleveland 1B Jay Kirke swings at a wild pitch for strike three and reaches 1B. Cleveland beats the White Sox, who protest on the grounds that the rules did not permit Kirke to take 1B. The protest is upheld and the game ordered replayed.
