Kirke was legendary as an eccentric who lived for his base hits. His fearsome hitting
offset his poor defense, about which he was unconcerned. The despair of four ML teams
who tried to fit him into their lineups, Kirke collected over 3,000 hits in his 1906-35
minor league career.
