Kerfeld was a breath of fresh air as an enthusiastic, wisecracking, and obese 6'6" righthander who won 11 games and saved seven for the 1986 NL West champion Astros. But his weight problems forced him back to the minors after a horrendous start in 1987, and elbow trouble has put his pitching career in jeopardy. (ME)
FROM THE BASEBALL CHRONOLOGY
» October 1, 1985: Houston's Charlie Kerfeld beats the Braves, 2–0, handing the loss to starter to Steve Bedrosian (7-15). Bedrock is not around at the end and finishes none of his 37 starts this year, a ML record.

» July 18, 1995: Dave Andrews, public address announcer for the Abilene Prairie Dogs of the Texas-Louisiana League, is ejected from a game after Abilene manager Charlie Kerfeld is given the boot. Andrews proceeds to read a commercial for an eyeglass chain, infuriating the umpire. Andrews claims it was coincidence, but is still fined $50.
