Washington's John Kennedy pinch hits against the Twins and becomes the 9th American League player to debut with a home run in his first at bat. His blow breaks up a no-hit bid by Dick Stigman, and the Nats rally to tie the game at 7–7 in the 9th, The Twins win 9–7 in 11 frames, then drop the nitecap, 3–0, as Claude Osteen fires a three hitter. The split leaves the Twins two 1/2 games behind the Yankees.

» July 5, 1970: At Fenway Park, Boston's John Kennedy makes his first ML at bat a memorable one when he pinch hits an inside-the-park homer. Kennedy bats for P Mike Nagy in the 5th inning of the 8–4 Boston win over the Indians.

The Twins cap a 3-run rally in the 9th, scoring the winning run when Harmon Killebrew draws a bases loaded walk from Red Sox reliever Newhauser. Boston wins, 7–6. Minnesota is helped by Juan Beniquez's 2nd straight three-error game, a record for American League shortstops. John Kennedy will take over the SS job, while Beniquez will play the rest of his ML career mostly in the outfield and at 1B.
