Katalinas was a member of the Detroit Tigers organization for over four decades, joining as a part-time scout in 1940 and rising to scouting director in 1956 and scouting coordinator in 1975. He first spotted Al Kaline as a Baltimore grade-school player, and signed him in 1953 just after his high-school graduation. In 1963 Katalinas's recommendation brought Denny McLain from the White Sox on waivers when Chicago failed to protect him, and he also helped sign Ray Oyler and Jim Northrup. (FVP)
