The Mets picked up Kanehl, who spent eight years in the Yankee farm system, in the minor league draft. Manager Casey Stengel remembered the hustling utility man who vaulted a fence to catch a fly ball in the Yankees' 1954 instructional camp. The fan favorite hit the Mets' first grand slam on July 6, 1962, in the first Met victory witnessed by owner Joan Payson. (SH)
