Jones was a utility infielder, but he contributed several key hits to the Red Sox' "Impossible Dream" pennant of 1967. On September 18, in the heat of a tight four-team race, he hit a game-winning tenth-inning homer at Tiger Stadium. The lefthanded batter led the AL with 13 pinch hits that season. He started at third base in four games of the World Series and batted .389 (7-for-18). A .261 lifetime pinch hitter, he got more than one third of his ML at-bats off the bench. Dalton hit a grand slam for Detroit on July 9, 1970 but passed Don Wert between first and second base, making it a single. (PB)
FROM THE BASEBALL CHRONOLOGY
» September 18, 1967: Boston rallies to beat the 1st place Tigers in Detroit. A Carl Yastrzemski home run, his 40th, ties the game 5–5 in 9th inning and a solo home run by Dalton Jones wins it in the 10th. Hours later, Detroit will receive another blow when Denny McLain leaps off a couch and sprains his left ankle. He will not pitch until the last game of the year.

» December 13, 1969: The Red Sox send 1B Syd O'Brien and pitcher Billy Farmer and cash to the White Sox for P Gary Peters and C Don Pavletich. Boston also picks up 3B Tom Matchick from the Tigers for Dalton Jones. Farmer will announce his retirement and in March the White Sox will replace him with P Jerry Jarneski.

» July 9, 1970: Dalton Jones of the Tigers loses a grand slam against the Red Sox when he passes teammate Don Wert on the base paths. Jones pinch hits for Jim Price and belts a 2-2 pitch from Vincente Romo into the RF upper deck for a grand slam. However, he passes Wert between first and second and is called out, ending up with a 3-RBI single.
