Don was born in Chicago the winter before his father, shortstop Ernie Johnson, debuted with the White Sox. Pep, a journeyman minor leaguer, joined the Cubs in 1943 at age thirty-one, became a regular at second base in 1944, and hit a high of .302 for the 1945 pennant winners. (DAS)
