Johnson was a muscular, strikeout-prone, righthanded slugger who didn't play regularly in the ML until his ninth professional season, but still hit 245 home runs in the ML after belting 162 in the minors. He was dubbed "another Mickey Mantle" by the overreactive New York press after hitting .329 with 24 HR and 78 RBI in only 63 games in the lowly Nebraska State League in 1956, but he played only 19 games for the Yankees before being traded to the A's in 1961. He was purchased by the Reds after spending most of 1962 in the military, and in 1963 he led the Pacific Coast League with 33 HR at San Diego.

Johnson hit 21 HR for the Reds in 1964, and no longer tried to pull every pitch over the left-field fence, although he still struck out often. In 1965 he led the NL with 130 RBI while batting .287 with 32 HR, and he added 24 HR in 1966. Defensively, Johnson was bouncing from first base to third base to the outfield, rarely remaining at one position for more than a season. The Braves traded three players to get Johnson after the 1967 season, but sold him to Philadelphia after he hit only .208 in 1968, and with the Phillies he tied a ML record with home runs in four consecutive at-bats, July 10 and 11, 1971. After Johnson's average dipped again to .213 in 1972, the Phillies traded him to the A's for a single minor leaguer, and he spent 1973-76 shuttling around the AL as a designated hitter and occasional first baseman. FROM THE BASEBALL CHRONOLOGY
» June 14, 1961: Sound familiar? The KC A's ship P Bud Daley, their top winner the past two seasons, to the Yankees for P Art Ditmar and OF Deron Johnson. The Yanks then send P Danny McDevitt to the Twins for infielder Billy Gardner.

» April 18, 1964: Jim Maloney tosses six innings of no-hit ball against the Dodgers, before leaving with a pulled muscle. John Tsitouris relieves and pitches hitless ball until two are out in the 9th inning when Frank Howard beats out an infield single. Sandy Koufax fans the side on nine pitches in the 3rd inning, becoming the first National League pitcher to do it twice (and matching Lefty Grove), but Cincinnati wins, 3–0, on Deron Johnson's 3-run homer.

» June 5, 1964: At Crosley field, the Reds plate four runs in the 9th inning to edge the Cards, 5–4. Deron Johnson drives home the tying and winning run with a single.

» June 7, 1964: Deron Johnson again leads the Reds to a win over the Cards as he collects a homer, double and three singles. The Reds win, 11–6.

» September 4, 1965: The Reds score three runs in the 9th to edge the Phillies, 5–4. Deron Johnson drives in the last two runs with a single.

» June 4, 1966: The Cubs beat the Reds, 6–4, as Ron Santo hits two homers and a single. Deron Johnson makes a great catch to rob Santo of a 4th hit.

» August 12, 1966: At Crosley Field, long-ball lovers enjoy 11 home runs in one game, tying the most in any contest and setting a major-league record for an extra-inning contest. Art Shamsky hits three for Cincinnati, including two in extra innings. But Pittsburgh prevails 13–11, scoring three in the 13th inning. Shamsky, who did not enter the game until the 8th, when he hits a 2-run homer to put the Reds up 8–7. His solo homer in the 9th ties the score at 9-9, as does his 2-run homer in the 11th. Shamsky's pair of extra-inning homers is a first in the National League, and just the 3rd time ever in the Majors (Vern Stephens, 1943: Willie Kirkland, 1963). Also going deep are Rose, Deron Johnson, Bob Bailey (2), Clemente, Jesse Gonder, and Jerry Lynch. For Lynch, it is his 18th pinch-hit home run, a ML record.

» October 10, 1967: The Reds swap Deron Johnson to the Braves, getting P Jay Ritchie, and outfielders Mack Jones and Jim Beauchamp.

» June 20, 1971: Four grand slams are hit in the ML, by the Braves Earl Williams, the Phillies Deron Johnson, the White Sox Rick Reichardt, and the Pirates Willie Stargell. Williams' slam comes in a 5–4 loss, and the Braves drop a 2nd game, 2–0 to the Reds. The Pirates whip Montreal, 7–1, and the Sox pummel the Twins, 18–8. Johnson's slam, in the 11th, gives the Phils a split with the Mets.

» July 11, 1971: Deron Johnson hits three home runs, giving him four straight over two games, helping the Phils beat the Expos 11–5.

» September 22, 1975: The Red Sox pick up vet Deron Johnson from the Chicago Whit Sox for minor leaguer Chuck Erickson and cash. A year ago on September 7, the Sox purchased Johnson from Brewers and then released him at the end of the year. This time, Deron will play 15 games in 1976 before being released.
