In Detroit, the Tigers top the Orioles, 14–9, their 3rd straight win after 11 consecutive losses. Brian Johnson and Travis Fryman homer for the Tigers while teammate Bobby Higginson adds a two-run inside-the-park homer, his fifth round tripper this week. For Scott Erickson (11-4) it is the worst start of his career for Baltimore, allowing all 12 runs, 11 earned, and 10 hits in four 1-3 innings. Willie Blair (6-4) takes the win in relief. The O's are led by Rafael Palmeiro's homer, triple and single and homers by Geronimo Berroa, Jeff Reboulet and Tony Tarasco.
» September 18, 1997: At San Francisco, Brian Johnson homers in the 12th inning to give the Giants a 6–5 win over the Dodgers and a tie for the lead in the National League West. Rod Beck gives up three singles in the 10th, but K's Todd Zeile and gets Eddie Murray on a DP.
» June 10, 1998: In honor of C Brian Johnson, the Giants hold "Brian Johnson Buzz Cut Night." Everyone who gets their head shaved receives four free box seat tickets. The Giants lose the game to the Mariners, 4–1.
» September 4, 1999: Cincinnati scores nine runs in the 5th inning on the way to a 22-3 blowout over Philadelphia. The Reds tie an National League record by hitting nine home runs in the contest -- 2 by C Eddie Taubensee and one apiece by Aaron Boone, Dmitri Young, Jeffrey Hammonds, Greg Vaughn, Pokey Reese, Brian Johnson, and Mark Lewis. Chad Ogea, in two 2/3 innings, allows three dingers; he has now served up a league high 35. Stan Belinda of the Reds earns a save for Pete Harnisch (14-8); he benefits from the rule that mandates a save be awarded if a pitcher works three innings in relief.
