Former Reds outfielder Vada Pinson described this 5'10" Texan as "Very competitive, small, big heart - he knew how to pitch. He fought you every kind of way to help beat you." Although Jackson went 8-20 for the fledgling Mets in both 1962 and 1965, the gutty southpaw threw all four of the Mets' shutouts in 1962. His 43 career victories were a pre-Seaver Met high. Jackson went 9-4 with the World Champion '67 Cards but did not appear in the World Series. (RTM)

» April 12, 1965: Don Drysdale slugs his 2nd opening day homer, this one a 2-run shot off New York's Al Jackson. LA wins 6–1 at Shea Stadium.

» October 20, 1965: St. Louis trades 3B Ken Boyer to the Mets for P Al Jackson and 3B Charlie Smith.

» May 20, 1967: Mets reliever Jack Hamilton hits his only ML homer, a grand slam off Al Jackson, but it is not enough as the Cardinals win, 11–9.

» May 29, 1969: With the Braves drubbing the Mets 12–0, manager Lum Harris lifts Hank Aaron for another Lum—Mike Lum. Lum hits a pinch double off Al Jackson and takes over in LF as the Braves coast to a 15–3 win. It is the 3rd time in his career that Aaron has been lifted for a pinch hitter.

» June 5, 1999: Mets manager Bobby Valentine reads in a newspaper report that pitching coach Bob Apodaca is out, and, arriving at the park, discovers that, along with Apodaca, GM Phillips has fired coaches Tom Robson and Randy Niemann. Phillips names replacement coaches Dave Wallace, Al Jackson, and Mickey Brantley.
