Iorg was a solid utility player who spent most of his career as the righthanded half of a third-base platoon with Rance Mulliniks. He was most recognizable for his strange batting stance, on the toes of his front foot and leaning back toward the catcher as the ball was being pitched.

Selected by the Blue Jays from the Yankee organization in the 1976 expansion draft, Iorg spent his entire nine-season ML career with the Blue Jays. In his final ML plate appearance, Iorg made Toronto's last out of the 1987 season when a hit would have tied the Blue Jays with Detroit for the AL East title. At the time of his retirement, Iorg was the Blue Jay career leader in pinch hits. Usually a singles hitter, Iorg hit well enough (with batting stats aided by judicious platooning) to have the highest batting average (.313) on the Blue Jays in their division-winning 1985 season, along with a .469 slugging percentage. FROM THE BASEBALL CHRONOLOGY » June 20, 1993: In a 3–2 loss to Chattanooga, Knoxville Smokies manager Garth Iorg and P Travis Baptist are ejected for breaking a rule banning the use of tobacco in the dugout or clubhouse. Baptist was tossed for chewing it and Iorg for not stopping him. The rule has been in effect for all the minor leagues since June 15th.
