A flashy fielder, Hunter was an All-Star as a Browns rookie. He was hitting .252 at the time, but finished the season at .219. As the Orioles' third base coach, he was renowned for his frenetic, arm-wheeling "Go!" signal. (WAB)
FROM THE BASEBALL CHRONOLOGY
» September 26, 1953: Billy Hunter becomes the last St. Louis Browns player to homer in a game. The Browns lose anyway 6-3 to Chicago.

» November 18, 1954: In an enormous two-part trade begun on November 14, the Yankees and Orioles exchange 17 players. Included are 1B Dick Kryhoski, pitchers Bob Turley and Don Larsen, and SS Billy Hunter from Baltimore. To the Orioles go OF Gene Woodling, SS Willie Miranda, pitchers Harry Byrd and Jim McDonald, and catchers Gus Triandos and Hal Smith. The trade will help both teams.

» February 19, 1957: The Kansas City Athletics ship pitchers Art Ditmar, Bobby Shantz, and Jack McMahan, and infielders Clete Boyer, Curt Roberts and Wayne Belardi to the Yankees. In return they receive pitchers Maury McDermott, Tom Morgan, Gary Coleman, and Jack Urban, OF Irv Noren, plus infielders Billy Hunter and Milt Graff. Roberts didn't go to NYC till May 4, while Boyer went a month later. Hunter and Urban don't switch until April 5. The veteran Shantz and Boyer will be valuable pickups for New York, with Shantz leading the American League in ERA this year, and Boyer a tough defensive 3B for eight years in pinstripes. The A's will eventually admit that when they signed Boyer for a $40,000 bonus in 1955, it was on behalf of the Yankees, with the understanding that they'd later ship him to NY.

» June 28, 1977: Billy Hunter becomes the Rangers' 4th manager in six days. Connie Ryan had filled in after Eddie Stanky's departure.

» October 1, 1978: Rangers manager Billy Hunter is fired following a 9–4 victory over the Mariners. Seattle's Kevin Pasley homers in what will be his last ML at bat. Pasley's only career home run comes off Fergie Jenkins.
