Hummel spent 12 seasons in the majors, two of them as the Dodgers' starting second
baseman. He led NL second basemen in fielding both years (.965 and .972). Hummel
also led the league in strikeouts (81) in 1910. Hummel's career in organized baseball
spanned
24 years. After his playing career in the majors, Hummel coached in the minors. Hummel
managed minor league teams in Saskatoon, Binghamton, Harrisburg, Scranton, and Wheeling,
and finished his career managing Springfield in 1927.
