The free-spirited Stanford graduate once quipped, "Billy Graham is a cracker." Hovley
debuted with the one-year Pilots in 1969. Starting the season with a crewcut, he
wouldn't cut his hair, not wanting to discriminate against any particular hairs.
A line-drive hitter with good speed, Hovley was generally a fourth outfielder and
led the AL in pinch-hit appearances with ^b
