Signed off the Detroit sandlots, Houtteman first appeared with the Tigers at 17. A fast learner with a sharp curve and deceptive sinker, he came back from a 2-16 season in 1948 to win 15 in 1949. He suffered a fractured skull that year but recovered to win 19 games in 1950. After a year in the army, and the death of his baby in a car crash, he struggled to an 8-20 record in 1952. Traded to Cleveland, he was 15-7 for the 1954 pennant-winners. (JCA)
FROM THE BASEBALL CHRONOLOGY
» June 24, 1950: Art Houtteman pitches Detroit to a 4–1 win over the Yankees. Yogi Berra's homer is the only Yankee score, as New York loses their 4th straight and 8th in 12 games. Detroit now leads the AL by three games.

» September 9, 1950: The Tigers and White Sox finally finish a game that started in April. The game was originally scheduled as the nitecap of a Doubleheader, April 30, but was halted by darkness after 9 innings deadlocked at 77. Rescheduled for August 10, the contest was halted in the seventh with the score 1–1. Art Houtteman finally ends it with a 1–0, 12 inning win. Hoot Evers triples and scores on a single by Johnny Groth. The league leaders fail to cash in by losing the nitecap, 5–4, cutting their lead to a half game over New York and a game ahead of Boston.

» September 28, 1950: The Tigers three out of four game in their series with the Browns, but only have one winning pitcher—Hal White. He relieves in all four games, winning three straight. The Tigers lose game one on the 26th, 4–1, with the defeat going to Newhouser. White relieves Trout in the nitecap and wins, 5–3, after hurtling one inning. He replaced Art Houtteman yesterday in the ninth and threw one pitch and won 5–4. Today he relieves in the 10th and the Tigers score in the 12th to win, 4–3.

» April 26, 1952: Detroit's Art Houtteman's no-hit bid is broken up on a 2-out, 9th-inning hit by Harry Simpson, but the Tigers romp over the Indians 13-0.
