The Orioles select Louisiana State University pitcher Ben McDonald (14–3) with the first pick in the annual amateur draft. He'll sign August 19 and debut September 6, missing by three days being the first in this draft to debut. The Jays John Olerud, picked on the 3rd round, will debut September 3, singling in his first at bat. The next three picks are high schoolers: the Braves take Tyler Houston; the Mariners pick Roger Salkeld; and the Phillies choose Jeff Jackson. The White Sox get Frank Thomas with the 7th pick, while the Angels take Kyle Abbott with the 10th, and Chad Curtis on the 45th round. The Dodgers use their 1st round pick on Jamie McAndrew, son of former Mets P Jim McAndrew. Mo Vaughn goes to Boston on the 23rd pick and Chuck Knoblauch to the Twins on the 25th (he had been picked on the 18th round by the Phils in 1986, but did not sign). On the 4th round, the Twins select and sign P Scott Erickson, who was drafted but not signed in the previous three drafts. » May 20, 1996: Led by Chipper Jones and Tyler Houston, each with five RBI, the Braves pound the Cubs, 18–1 to make Steve Avery's 5th win an easy one. Houston gets his ribbies when he replaces Fred McGriff in the 5th inning.
» July 26, 1996: The Cubs defeat the Rockies, 17–4, as C Tyler Houston leads the way with a single, double, homer, and six RBIs. Sammy Sosa has his National League-leading 34th homer.
» April 28, 1999:
Marlins P Archie Corbin ties the major league record with four strikeouts in the 7th inning against the Cubs. Tyler Houston, who was his 2nd K victim, reaches 1st on a wild pitch. Wilson Alvarez, on July 21, 1997, is the last to strike out four in an inning.
» August 31, 1999:
In three pennant insurance moves, the Astros obtain vet Stan Javier from the Giants for P Joe Messman; the Diamondbacks get IF-OF Lenny Harris from the Rockies in exchange for IF Belvani Martinez; and the Indians pick up the once highly touted Tyler Houston from the Cubs for P Richard Negrette. Houston will prove valuable at 3B.
» July 9, 2000:
Led by 1B Tyler Houston, who strokes three home runs and drives home six runs, the Brewers beat the Tigers, 10-3.
» May 15, 2001: The Brewers pound out 22 hits as they defeat the Phillies, 14-10. The Brewskis almost blow an 8-run lead before going ahead in the 10th inning on Richie Sexson's double. Tyler Houston gets five hits, including a double, for Milwaukee, while Devon White hits a grand slam.
» July 23, 2002:
The Dodgers get IF Tyler Houston from the Brewers in exchange for pitchers Ben Diggins and Shane Nance.
