The lefthanded-hitting Hoffman was considered a top A's prospect in 1904 when a pitch from Boston southpaw Jesse Tannehill hit him in the eye. He never recovered enough vision to stand in against lefthanded pitching. He was the American League's 1905 stolen-base champ, with 46, and stole 185 bases in his career. (NLM)
FROM THE BASEBALL CHRONOLOGY
» April 29, 1906: The New York ban on Sunday baseball is temporarily lifted and the Highlanders and Philadelphia A's play a benefit game for the victims of the San Francisco earthquake, raising $5,600. The two teams also work out a deal: the Highlanders get speedster Danny Hoffman in exchange for the rights to OF Dave Fultz, who did not play last year. The 31-year-old Fultz quit to practice law and will stay quit.

» November 5, 1907: The Yankees trade 2B Jimmy Williams and OF Danny Hoffman to the Browns for P Fred Glade, speedy 2B Harry Niles, and OF Charlie Hemphill. Glade will pitch just five games in 1908 before retiring.
