Journeyman Hoag served as a reserve on four Yankee pennant-winners. He had extremely small feet which required special shoes, and somehow supported a 5'11" 180-lb body. In a career-high 129 games as the 1939 Browns' right fielder, Hoag hit .295 with 10 HR. (JK)
FROM THE BASEBALL CHRONOLOGY
» September 22, 1932: The Yanks overcome two homers by Jimmie Foxx, one a grand slam, and edge the Athletics in 10 innings, 8–7. Foxx now has 56 homers. The Yanks comeback starts in the 8th inning when Gehrig hits a 2-run homer, his 33rd. Myril Hoag's homer in the 9th ties it for NY.

» June 6, 1934: Myril Hoag, subbing for Babe Ruth, ties the AL record with six singles in six at bats in the first game of a doubleheader with the Red Sox. The Yanks rout Lefty Grove and roll to a 15–3 win. Boston wins the nitecap, 7–3, to drop the Yanks to 2nd place.

» July 28, 1936: In the 6th inning of a 16–6 Yankee win in Detroit, the Tiger's Goose Goslin drives a ball in the gap in right center. Right fielder DiMaggio and CF Myril Hoag, in for a slumping Powell, sprint for the ball and collide, the ball bounding by for an inside-the -park homer. Both players are knocked unconscious but appear unhurt: Dimag stays in though Hoag is replaced. He'll play tomorrow and collect a single, then collapse in his hotel room on the 30th with a brain clot. Hoag will be operated on successfully at Harper Hospital and will be out the rest of the season, but he'll return to play six more years. New York wins the game on 20 hits, scoring four runs in each of the first two innings, and three apiece in the 4th and 5th. Lou Gehrig's two doubles, single and number 31 with two aboard pace the visitors. Tommy Bridges is the loser while Johnny Murphy, who relieves Monte Pearson in the 4th, is credited with the win. Selkirk adds a homer for the Yankees, who have now hit 122.

» May 17, 1941: Myril Hoag's clutch hitting paces the White Sox to a 3–2 win over the Yankees, as Chicago wins the rubber game in the 3-game series.

» May 1, 1996: The Yanks and Orioles continue their marathon play, this one going five hours and 43 minutes before ending at one a.m. Tino Martinez, whose homer snapped yesterday's tie, slugs a grand slam in the 15th to give reliever Andy Pettitte the win. Bernie Williams has five hits while Gerald Williams collects 6—just the 2nd Yankee to get six in a game; Myril Hoag in 1934, is the other. The O's and Yankees strand 15 runners in extra innings, as both teams squander scoring opportunities, and New York survives four errors by two second basemen. Jim Mecir strikes out Brady Anderson with the bases loaded in the 10th after going to a 3–0 count. Cal Ripken is lifted for a pinch runner in the 8th—who is promptly picked off—and sits for the last seven innings, the longest stretch he's rested in 2,180 games.
