Hinchman failed to hit as a regular Cleveland outfielder (1907-09) but won a second
chance at the majors by setting American Association records for hits, doubles, and
total bases at Columbus in 1914. In both 1915 and '16 he topped .300 for the Pirates.
A broken leg in 1917 ended his productivity. As a Pittsburgh scout, he discovered
Arky Vaughan, Lloyd Waner, and Billy Cox, among others. His brother Harry played
briefly with Cleveland in 1907.

FROM THE BASEBALL CHRONOLOGY
»October 4, 1908:
In St. Louis, Cleveland ends up with a frustrating 3-3 tie with the Browns when umpire John Egan makes a controversial out call against the Naps at 1B. Most observers thought that Bill Hinchman beat the 9th inning throw, but Egan's call results in a tie game.
