Acquired from the Orioles, Hernandez was installed as a Padres regular in 1971 and led NL shortstops @9; @x with 33 errors. He had only 12 RBI in 549 times at bat. More or less the regular through 1976, he improved his defense but never hit well. Only in 1976 did his RBI outnumber his stolen bases (24 to 12). (MC)
FROM THE BASEBALL CHRONOLOGY
» December 4, 1968: Houston also swaps P Mike Cuellar, and infielders Elijah Johnson and Enzo Hernandez to the Orioles for outfielders Curt Blefary and John Mason. Cuellar, 8-11 this past season, will average 20 wins a year for five years in Baltimore. Except for the Frank Robinson trade, this ranks as the best for the O's.

» December 1, 1970: Pitchers Tom Phoebus, Al Severinsen, and Fred Beene, and SS Enzo Hernandez, go from the Orioles to the Padres for pitchers Pat Dobson and Tom Dukes. Dobson will win 20 games for the Orioles in 1971.
