Hermanson broke in with the Padres in 1995, but pitched sparingly in his two seasons in San Diego. He was sent to Florida in November 1996 for Quilvio Veras and was passed along to Montreal for Cliff Floyd just four months later.

Armed with a low-90s fastball, a slider, and a changeup, Hermanson continued to show promise in 1997, and after a 14-11 season with a 3.13 ERA in 1998 the 25-year-old was the ace of the Montreal Expos' rotation and on the verge of baseball stardom. But in 1999 he lost command of his pitches and although he chewed up 216 innings for the Expos, he posted a 4.20 ERA.

The next year Hermanson's ERA continued to rise. With injuries to Scott Strickland and Ugueth Urbina, manager Felipe Alou decided to try him as a closer, but Hermanson blew three saves in seven opportunities in May 2000 and was quickly returned to the rotation.

The Expos finally gave up on him and traded him to the St. Louis Cardinals with Steve Kline for Fernando Tatis and Britt Reames after the season. The Cardinals hoped a change of venue would rescue his career and Hermanson responded with a 4.45 ERA and a 14-13 record. (EPW)

FROM THE BASEBALL CHRONOLOGY
» March 26, 1997: The Marlins acquire OF Cliff Floyd from the Expos in exchange for P Dustin Hermanson and OF Joe Orsulak.

» April 16, 1997: In the Astros' 10-2 win over the Expos, Houston reliever Dustin Hermanson hits a home run in his 1st major league at bat. It is just his 3rd at bat since becoming a professional in 1994.

» September 13, 1997: The Mets, down 6–0 with one strike to go in the bottom of the 9th rally to tie the Expos. Carl Everett ties the game with a grand slam. Two innings later, Bernard Gilkey hits a three-run homer to end it, 9–6. Facing Dustin Hermanson, the Mets manage just one hit through the first eight innings, and that is a blooper by Carlos Mendoza, his first ML hit. Two singles and two relievers later the Mets tie it. John Franco is the winner over Steve Kline.

» August 19, 1998: The Expos beat Arizona, 8–2, giving Felipe Alou his 521st career win as manager of the Montreal Expos. Buck Rodgers had 520. Alou's good luck charm is P Dustin Hermanson, who allows three hits in seven innings. Hermanson was also the starting and winning pitcher in Alou's 400th, 450th, and 500th win.

» April 5, 1999: The Expos defeat the Pirates, 9–2, behind the pitching of Dustin Hermanson. Jason Phillips makes his major league debut in the 6th inning for Pittsburgh and sees his first pitch hit over the centerfield wall for a home run by C Chris Widger.

» December 14, 2000: The Expos obtain 3B Fernando Tatis and P Britt Reames from the Cardinals for pitchers Dustin Hermanson and Steve Kline. The Cards, snubbed by Mike Hampton, pick up a starter in Hermanson. Tatis missed 54 games after an April 29 groin injury.

» April 17, 2001: The Diamondbacks beat up on the Cardinals, 17–4, collecting 15 runs in the first four innings off Dustin Hermanson and Chad Hutchinson. The last two runs come in the 9th off Bobby Bonilla, making his ML pitching debut. The most successful Card pitcher is Gene Stechschulte, who belts a 6th inning pinch homer on the 1st pitch of his 1st ML at bat (he is the 15th pitcher to accomplish this, according to home run maven David Vincent). Also getting beat up is Umpire Larry Young who is struck in the forehead by a throw from Arizona's Jay Bell and requires 14 stitches to close the gash. He'll be out 2-3 weeks. Arizona is paced by Jay Bell's four hits, including a home run, and WP Armando Reynoso.

» December 16, 2001: The Red Sox acquire P Dustin Hermanson from the Cardinals in exchange for three minor leaguers—OF Rick Asadoorian and 1Bs Luis Garcia and Dustin Brisson.
