Books and articles about Ellie Hendricks

Hendricks became famous in Game One of the 1970 World Series for a defensive play that he didn't really make. Attempting to tag out Bernie Carbo of the Reds in the sixth inning after Ty Cline hit a chopper in front of the plate, Hendricks collided with umpire Ken Burkhart while "tagging" Carbo with his mitt and holding the ball in his throwing hand. The bowled-over Burkhart couldn't see the play and called Carbo out. Hendricks had hit the game-tying HR in the previous inning. The next day, his two-run double in the fifth inning drove in the winning runs; he had four RBI in the Series.

The ever-smiling Hendricks was a favorite of Earl Weaver's for his steady fielding and because lefthanded-hitting catchers were hard to come by. Twice Baltimore traded and reacquired him. Hendricks had back-to-back 12 HR seasons in 1969-70 while platooning with Andy Etchebarren, but never started more than 95 games in a season. The native Virgin Islander did lead AL catchers in fielding in 1969. His .250 average in 1971 was a career high. He spent much of the 1980s as the Orioles' bullpen coach. (SH)
FROM THE BASEBALL CHRONOLOGY
» April 29, 1970: Baltimore's Paul Blair collects three homers and six RBIs in an 18–2 rout of the White Sox. Elrod Hendricks and Boog Powell also homer, each with two men on to back Jim Palmer.

» October 10, 1970: Baltimore overcomes a 3–0 deficit to beat the Reds 4–3 in the World Series opener at Riverfront Stadium as Boog Powell, Ellie Hendricks, and Brooks Robinson contribute home runs to the winning effort. The Jackson Five sing the National Anthem.

» October 4, 1971: Baltimore wins its 2nd straight game in the ALCS, beating Oakland 5–1 on home runs by Boog Powell (2), Brooks Robinson, and Ellie Hendricks. Four of Baltimore's seven hits against Catfish Hunter are homers.

» August 18, 1972: The Orioles trade C Elrod Hendricks to the Cubs for OF/1B Tommy Davis.

» September 16, 1972: At Wrigley, Glenn Beckert sets a dubious major-league record by stranding 12 base runners but his Cubs beat the Mets, 18–5. The Cubs jump first, knocking out Tom Seaver in just two 1/3 innings. After Seaver loads the bases on walks in the 3rd, pitcher Burt Hooton homers. Chicago garners 15 walks, with Elrod Hendricks walking five straight times, a National League record. Cubs 2B Glenn Beckert sets a dubious major-league record when he strands 12 baserunners.

» June 15, 1974: Baltimore beats the White Sox, 4–3, in 11 innings. Don Baylor enters the game in the 9th as a pinch runner and makes the record books with a steal and twice getting caught stealing, thanks to misplays by the Sox. Bobby Grich opens with a single and Tommy Davis singles him to 3B. Davis is then picked off, but an error by Dick Allen at 1B allows both runners to move up. After an out, Ellie Hendricks singles Davis home and Baylor pinch runs. Baylor gets caught stealing second but 2B Ron Santo drops the throw from Ed Herrmann. Baylor then swipes 3B and, following a intentional walk to Brooks Robinson, he is caught stealing home, Herrmann unassisted. Andy Etchebarren strikes out to end the unique frame. Baylor's mark is a ML record, but will be matched four times in the National League between 1987 and 1992.

» June 15, 1976: In what stands as one of the O's best trades ever, Baltimore obtains pitchers Rudy May, Tippy Martinez, Dave Pagan, Scott McGregor and C Rick Dempsey from the Yankees for veteran pitchers Doyle Alexander, Ken Holtzman, Grant Jackson and C Elrod Hendricks. The veterans will help the Yankees win in 1976 and then fade.

» June 26, 1978: Toronto's Dave McKay and Otto Velez each hit two doubles in one inning during a 24–10 rout of Baltimore. With the score 19–6 following a homer by Lee May, Earl Weaver tosses OF Larry Harlow to the Blue Jay. Harlow gets two batters out in the 5th, then walks three in a row and hurls a wild pitch. He then allows a single, a walk, and a grand slam by John Mayberry makes the score 24–6. Bullpen catcher Ellie Hendricks then relieves Harlow and gives up just a walk and no runs in 2-1/3 innings. Closer Don Stanhouse takes over in the 8th.
