Henderson was one of four young players the Reds traded to the Mets for Tom Seaver on June 15, 1977. Though he played in only 99 games that year, he led the last-place Mets with 65 RBI and lost by one vote to Andre Dawson in Rookie-of-the-Year balloting. His nine triples in 1978 tied a club record, and his .306 average in 1979 and .290 in 1980 led the Mets. Traded to the Cubs for Dave Kingman in 1981, he had one more solid season, hitting .294 with 32 doubles for the 1983 Mariners. (JCA)

The Mets also trade slugger Dave Kingman to the Padres for utility player Bobby Valentine and a minor league pitcher.

» July 12, 1977: Steve Henderson hits a game-winning home run, off Bruce Sutter, to give the Mets a 4–2 victory over the Cubs. Bleeding will be found in Sutter's arm and he will get the week off after the All-Star break to rest it.

» May 30, 1978: In his first ML start for the Cardinals, Silvio Martinez hurls a one-hit 8–2 victory over the Mets. Steve Henderson homers in the 7th inning for the lone safety. Martinez will spin two one-hitters and two 2–hitters this season.

» February 28, 1981: The Mets trade OF Steve Henderson and an estimated $100,000 to the Cubs for slugger Dave Kingman, who led the NL with 48 home runs in 1979.

» April 5, 1983: At Seattle, the Mariners open with a 5–4 win over the Yankees. Gaylord Perry makes his 9th Opening Day start, but the win goes to reliever Bryan Clark. Richie Zisk, a Yankee Opening Day nemesis, hits a two-run homer in Seattle's 4-run 3rd inning to chase Ron Guidry. New York chases Perry in the 6th with back-to back homers by Dave Winfield and Steve Kemp. Steve Henderson scores the winner in the 7th when he hits his 3rd single, steals second, takes 3rd on a grounder and scores on a sac fly.
