Since 1959 there have been only five ML playing managers: Pete Rose, Frank Robinson, Joe Torre, Don Kessinger, and Hemus. As the Cardinals skipper in 1959, he played 24 games, mostly pinch hitting, as St. Louis finished seventh. In 1960 he managed the team to third place. With the Cardinals in sixth place midway through the 1961 season, Hemus was replaced. He later coached for the Mets and Indians. (RTM)
FROM THE BASEBALL CHRONOLOGY
» September 15, 1951: The Cardinals take 11 walks, a record tying five by Solly Hemus, and beat the Braves 10–1. Boston's starter Dave Cole walks the first three batters he faces, then hits Enos Slaughter to force in Hemus.

» April 23, 1952: The NL fines and reprimands league umpire Scotty Robb for pushing Cardinal manger Eddie Stanky. Stanky and player Solly Hemus also receive fines.

» June 15, 1952: The Cardinals, down 11-0, rally to defeat the Giants 14-12. All the Redbird scores come in the last three innings, as Solly Hemus ties the game with an eighth-inning HR and adds another in the ninth. The Giants win 3-0 in game 2.

» May 20, 1953: Paced by Red Schoendienst's six RBIs, on a home run, two doubles, and a single, the Cards sink the Pirates 11–6. Solly Hemus scores five runs for the Birds, as Joe Presko beats Bob Friend.

» May 11, 1956: If you can't beat 'em, join 'em. The Cards trade pitchers Harvey Haddix, Stu Miller, and Ben Flowers to Philadelphia for P Herm Wehmeier and Murry Dickson. Wehmeier, who lost to the Cards two days ago, has never beaten St. Louis, losing his first game to them on July 3, 1949. The string of 14 losses to one team ties the ML record. The Cards also trade 2B Solly Hemus for SS Bobby Morgan in a separate deal.

» September 29, 1958: The Cardinals fire manager Fred Hutchinson (69-75 and a 5th-place finish), replacing him with Solly Hemus, who will be a player-manager. Hemus was just acquired today from the Phillies for Gene Freese.

» July 6, 1961: Solly Hemus (33-41) is fired as manager of the Cardinals and replaced by coach Johnny Keane.
