As an outfielder with Kansas City in 1957, his rookie year, Held hit 20 HR. He was
Cleveland's starting shortstop from 1959 through 1962. He hit a career-high 29 homers
in 1959 and averaged 21 a year in six seasons with the Indians. He struck out often,
nearly once in every four at-bats. Though easy-going off the field, he was notorious
for his tantrums after striking out. A versatile and reliable fielder, he remained
a valuable utility man after his days as a regular.

FROM THE BASEBALL CHRONOLOGY
»March 13, 1954: Newly acquired Bobby Thomson of the Braves breaks his ankle sliding into 2B under Woodie Held in an exhibition game with the Yankees at Al Lang Field. The injury, a trimalleor fracture, will keep Thomson out of action until July 14th, but it will open the way for Henry Aaron to start in the left field. Ironically, Aaron will suffer a fracture in September.
»September 4, 1960:
Woodie Held hits two homers and a double and drives in six runs to pace the Indians to a 10-2 win over the A's. Jimmy Piersall also homers.
»July 31, 1963: The Indians become the first American League club to hit four straight home runs. Number eight hitter Woody Held begins with a 2-out blast off Paul Foytack, P Pedro Ramos follows with his 2nd of the game, Tito Francona makes it three straight, and rookie SS Larry Brown's first ML 4-bagger finishes the string. Foytack sets a dubious ML record—the only pitcher to give up four straight home runs. The Indians win 9–5 in the opener of two with the Angels.
