When Heinkel finally made the majors in 1988 with the Tigers as a relief pitcher,
his season was interrupted for a month and a half by injury. Released at the end
of the season, he was
picked up by the Cardinals and was used as a starter in 1989
to fill in on their injury-prone staff.
