The sidearmer insisted his name be pronounced "Ay-bare." After three poor seasons with the Browns, he reemerged during WWII to go 10-11, 2.98 for the 1943 Pirates. (JK)
FROM THE BASEBALL CHRONOLOGY
» December 14, 1933: The Browns acquire OF Smead Jolley, P Ivy Andrews, and $40,000 from the Red Sox for P Carl Reynolds. St. Louis then sends Jolley, plus SS Jim Levey, and P Wally Hebert to Hollywood (PCL) for SS Alan Strange. Strange will go to Washington for veteran SS Lyn Lary before the end of the season. Levey, meanwhile, will return east in the fall to join the Pittsburgh Steelers, where he will play halfback for three seasons.

» May 2, 1943: Behind the strong pitching of Wally Hebert and Bob Klinger, the Pirates twice shut out the Cubs, winning 3–0 and 1–0. In the second game, Cubs hurlers Dick Barrett and Lon Warneke combine on a hardluck one-hit loss: Vince DiMaggio's hit in the 4th is the only safety.
