A fine defensive catcher but only an ordinary hitter, Hayworth lost his job as the regular Tiger backstop in 1934 when Mickey Cochrane became player-manager. Hayworth was Cochrane's sub as Detroit won pennants in 1934 and 1935 and continued as a backup for the remainder of his career. His brother Red Hayworth caught for the Browns during World War II.
